Apple’s first foldable iPhone is widely expected to debut this fall. According to 9to5Mac, the device may be named iPhone Ultra. Here are some of the key features anticipated for Apple’s new high-end foldable smartphone.
As the report indicates, the iPhone Ultra is expected to feature a book-style fold with a wider-than-tall design when unfolded. Its outer display will be shorter and wider than current iPhone screens, while the inner display will offer an iPad mini-like form factor. Unlike existing foldables, the device is also rumored to feature a crease-free inner display, marking a significant design breakthrough.
The report also says the iPhone Ultra will borrow elements from the iPhone Air design. It is expected to feature a titanium frame and an ultra-thin profile when unfolded. When closed, the device is said to resemble two iPhone Airs stacked together while remaining even thinner.
As for pricing, the report estimates that the iPhone Ultra could start at around US$1,999 for the 256GB model.
For displays, the iPhone Ultra is expected to feature a 5.3–5.5-inch outer screen and a 7.6–7.8-inch inner display. The outer display is rumored to offer an iPhone mini-like size with a wider aspect ratio, while the unfolded inner screen could deliver an experience similar to an iPad mini, according to the report.
The camera system is expected to include dual 48MP rear cameras, consisting of a main and ultra-wide lens. The device is also likely to feature two front-facing cameras—one for each display—with Apple reportedly using the same 18MP Center Stage camera introduced with the iPhone 17.
On the software side, some iPhone Ultra-exclusive iOS 27 features are expected to remain under wraps until this fall. Citing Bloomberg, 9to5Mac says the device will likely introduce side-by-side multitasking and iPad-like app layouts.
Another notable change involves biometric authentication. Rather than Face ID, the iPhone Ultra is expected to use Touch ID integrated into the power button. The report notes that the device’s thin design makes it difficult to accommodate separate Face ID modules for both displays.
The iPhone Ultra is also expected to feature Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and C2 cellular modem, both of which are also expected to power the iPhone 18 Pro. According to the report, the A20 Pro could deliver significant gains in performance and efficiency through TSMC’s 2nm node and WMCM (Wafer-level Multi-Chip Module) packaging. The chip is rumored to retain 12GB of RAM, matching the A19 Pro, while adopting faster LPDDR5 memory.
Meanwhile, the C2 modem is expected to serve as Apple’s next-generation in-house cellular solution, further reducing the company’s reliance on Qualcomm’s 5G modems, the report adds.
